Position Summary

To provide leadership and direction, while ensuring a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience for all users.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Head Guard responsibilities include:
• Supervising aquatic staff during assigned shifts
• Assisting with on the job training, in-service training and mentoring of aquatic staff
• Addressing patron and programming requirements in absence of Aquatic Coordinator
• Performing opening and closing pool checks
• Enforcing all pool regulations and educating on their benefits and requirements
• Assisting with the planning of aquatic special events i.e. Drowning Prevention Week
• Updating and maintaining contact with front desk and maintenance staff.
• Taking the lead in emergency procedures in absence of Aquatic Coordinator
• Monitoring recreational swimming activities, including: patrolling the pool deck and scanning the water, as well as monitoring patrons to ensure a safe swim environment
• Wearing the City’s assigned uniform, carrying an aid at all times, performing emergency rescues
• To the standard of the Head Guard’s certifications, responding to patron inquiries, resolving problems, and performing associated public education duties
• Setting up the pool deck prior to each shift
• Assisting maintenance staff with the cleaning of the change rooms and pool deck on a daily basis.
• Attending all scheduled staff meetings and training programs
• Recording all hours worked
• Hold and maintain all awards at own expense
• Performing other duties as assigned

Head Swim Instructor responsibilities include the items mentioned in the Head Guard responsibilities (above), in addition to:
• Ensuring instructor performance meets required standards
• Mentoring and co-instructing as required to maintain standards
• Ensuring all programs start on time, end on time and operate at a high standard
• Ensuring efficient and effective lessons transitions
• Resource and program lead for onsite instructional staff
• Instructing assigned Red Cross or Lifesaving Society aquatic programs to standard
• Responding to parent and participant questions promptly, courteously and thoroughly
• Teaching in the water for the majority of each class time when instructing
• Preparing a detailed lesson plans for assigned classes
• Writing, proofing and correcting Progress Reports for lesson participants as required

Qualifications, Competencies

National Lifeguard – Pool certification;

Lifesaving Society Instructor and/or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification;

Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED;

Minimum of 12 month's experience as a lifeguard/instructor;

Knowledge of City of Kingston specific aquatic policies/procedures;

The following certifications are considered assets:
High Five (PHCD) – Principals of Healthy Child Development certification, Lifesaving Society Instructor, Bronze Examiner, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Standard First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check), including Vulnerable Sector, at the candidates own expense;

Must meet and maintain physical fitness levels required for National Lifeguard certification;

Various tests may be administered as part of the interview and selection process.
