Job Summary

The Bank of Canada has a requirement for an experienced SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to focus on the overall administration of physical database environments and database management system (DBMS) software infrastructure to support live-production applications. This position ensures a smooth transition from development to production of all related ongoing operational requirements.
The DBA will work closely with application developers and other DBAs. The DBA’s primary responsibility will be to ensure that the SQL databases are well maintained and compliant with evolving technology. The DBA will participate in the delivery of the changes required to implement new components and ensure their successful integration with applications and infrastructure.

Central Responsibilities

• install, configure and maintain all supported DBMS software (Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL)
• upgrade existing SQL Server databases from 2000 and 2005 versions to 2008 version
• implement, test and support technical customizing and interfaces
• participate in application testing (new support packages, releases, functionality and customizing)
• ensure data consistency with best practices
• build database schema, tables, procedures and permissions
• analyze and tune databases for optimal efficiency
• act as a liaison for support groups and clients, and provide problem analysis and consultation for reliability of system access
• have ownership and responsibility for resolution of database-related technical issues
• have responsibility for database maintenance (minimize the amount of downtime to perform administrative tasks)
• have responsibility for database security administration (to ensure that data are available only to authorized users)
• analyze and monitor system performance to identify major performance bottlenecks in the system and identify the impact of administrative tasks on core business scenarios
• provide recommendations/decisions within architectural standards for development activities related to area of expertise
• identify and document technology-specific standards
• have responsibility for monitoring database standards
• maintain documentation and take an active role in training and knowledge sharing among co-workers
• participate in on-call rotation for critical applications

Key Requirements

• bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent combination of education and experience
• English or French essential
• 3+ years of experience in configuring memory in SQL Server 2008 and capacity planning
• 3+ years of experience creating and editing stored procedures in MS SQL Server
• recent working knowledge of MS SQL clustering
• minimum of 5 years of recent experience with database administration, including administration and installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or higher
• experience with database migration and software upgrades
• experience in planning and execution of testing related to performance, disaster recovery and business continuity
• experience in conducting research into leading-edge solutions, monitoring technology development and industry trends, and taking the lead in evaluating new services and techniques
• experience in monitoring system performance based on service-level agreements and ensure that they are met
• experience in providing expert advice, guidance and knowledge sharing in DBA domain, and in implementing database solutions
• ability to grasp issues quickly, identify alternative solutions and validate them with the Software Architect and/or the Enterprise Solution Architect and/or Mid-tier Specialist

Assets

• knowledge of WebLogic technology
• ability to communicate effectively in both official languages
