Position Summary

The Heritage Services Department is home to a dedicated team of heritage conservation professionals, including heritage planners, museum professionals and cultural programmers who provide cultural and historic interpretive opportunities and conservation planning advice to conserve and share the stories and history of this unique community. The Heritage Planning team provides professional knowledge, assessment and advice to ensure that Kingston’s heritage is conserved and managed in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act and good heritage planning principles, and under the policy umbrella of the Planning Act, the Provincial Policy Statement and the City of Kingston Official Plan. We are responsible for advising on proposed changes to protected heritage properties, reviewing heritage-related Planning Act applications, as well as commenting on and preparing longer term heritage-land-use planning and heritage conservation policy documents.

The Heritage Planning Student will assist heritage planning staff in a variety of projects and will include independent and teamwork assignments. This may include general data collection, research, analysis, coordination activities, and report preparation. This work may be prepared for staff or as background/research for larger projects. In addition, this position will provide practical planning experience in working within the municipal structure and under the provisions of the Official Plan, designation by-laws and policies, and Heritage Conservation District Plans. The role will also have opportunity to communicate with a wide variety of people on heritage related matters.

Examples of potential projects include:

Assisting with Property Research for the preparation of new Designation By-laws: This will include general support of the Heritage Planning team through the completion of administrative tasks such as the creation of spreadsheets for property tracking, compiling information to support Heritage Planning staff in heritage evaluations, and tracking the status of property designations.

Heritage Planning assistance: The student may be asked to assist with answering routine inquiries, arranging site visits, maintaining the Heritage files/database, refining the City’s Municipal Register, and attending meetings of the Kingston Heritage Properties Committee.

Heritage Resource Centre: The student may be asked to assist with the Heritage Resource Centre at City Hall. This could involve assisting volunteers, tourists, students and heritage property owners in locating information and resources.

Qualifications, Competencies

MUST BE ENROLLED IN AND RETURNING TO FULL-TIME POST SECONDARY STUDIES IN FALL OF 2024 – Verification will be required.

Preference will be given to applicants in the process of completing the first year of their School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) program.

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity and Teamwork.

The Heritage Services Department operates out of Kingston City Hall, 216 Ontario Street. This position will be expected to be in-office most days.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check at candidate’s own expense.
