Senior Mechanical Engineer

This company delivers products and services into the naval and military defence and transport markets alongside performing specialist research and providing services, including training and product support.
In the maritime domain, this company’s engineering capabilities cover a wide range of maritime mission systems requirements, including communications, torpedo and decoy launching systems, sonar systems, infrastructure and training.
Using its systems engineering skills, combined with in-depth knowledge and understanding of dismounted soldier operations, this company provides independent advice and research into future dismounted soldier systems and applications.
They have received a large government contract with the Canadian Government and will be expanding operations in their Canadian office.

The Role and the team:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will provide Mechanical Engineering services for the design and development of products through life. The Senior Mechanical Engineer shall deliver work packages in coordination with the project manager and the Mechanical Engineering Team (based in the UK).
Work areas shall include Naval Systems mechanical design, specialist production and test equipment engineering, mechanical design validation, support to In Service Support Engineers and Production Engineering, troubleshooting and investigative work.

A senior mechanical engineer is able to work both as an individual and as part of a team of multi-disciplined Engineers and specialists, to achieve programme results and customer deliverables in a timely manner and to a high quality.

This role may also require the mentoring and supervision of junior team members, including graduates and apprentices. Not immediately but in the future.
Produce technical documentation to company standards, including calculations, 3D CAD models and assemblies, manufacturing drawings and technical reports. This role requires a high degree of computer literacy, with experience of SolidWorks (including simulation and FE analysis) and the MS Office suite of programmes.

Responsibilities

• Be entirely responsible and accountable for their own performance but will be comfortable seeking support from senior members of staff and their line manager when required.
• Be a team player, with good communication and people skills, and a dynamic and motivated individual, with a strong desire to improve their knowledge and technical understanding.
• Produce sound technical solutions and ensure that they are well defined, optimised and understood by the entire team.
• Work to the correct standards of technical assurance, quality assurance, systems engineering and associated Acceptance criteria.
• Provide input into engineering effort and duration estimates, in order to ensure that work packages are delivered to quality, time and cost.
• Work to project milestones, with strong focus on the Customer’s requirements.
• Work with Project Managers to support the provision of accurate progress reports, and to escalate emergent risks and issues.
• Understand the technical trade-offs involved in making priority and ‘fit-for-purpose’ determinations.
• Share technical knowledge and best practice.
• Be confident and technically credible to their team and peers.


The jobholder will be expected to:

• Mechanical Design & Development (80%)
o Complete engineering designs using company approved tools (Solidworks).
o Understand other tools that support Mechanical content delivery (Altium).
o Build and test prototype equipment to support project delivery.
o Produce design documentation, including design specifications, test specifications and any required supporting documents for a Manufacturing Data Pack (MDP).
o Produce stress calculations to support design work, using a combination of first principles, design codes and FE analysis.
o Manage the design Manufacturing Data Pack.
o Support company products products during manufacturing, assembly, testing, installation, and through service life.
o Understand and implement the company’s environmental, health & safety policy by accepting individual responsibility and responsibility for those personnel under their authority, including others who may be affected by the company’s activities.
o Support production tasks where required, including Issue Management.
• Technical Governance (10%)
o Review and release mechanical design work.
o Ensure MDP is robust and fit for purpose.
• Bid & Project Management (10%)
o Define and agree mechanical work packages (scope, estimates, costs).
o Define mechanical elements of solutions to support bids and enquiries.
o Identify and mitigate technical risks.
o Set a strong personal example regarding all health and safety matters.
