The role of Security Services is to manage risks to the Bank of Canada's information, personnel, visitors and physical assets by countering threats with appropriate protective safeguards. You will be responsible for protecting Bank of Canada assets – personnel, information and valuables through your physical presence as an armed access-control agent.

Job Summary

As a Backup Security Officer in Security Services, you are employed on a 24-hour, 7-day shift schedule rotation, to provide a variety of security services to Head Office and the Ottawa Support Centre.

You provide assistance to employees and visitors and an armed response during life-threatening situations such as armed robbery and hostage taking, or other events such as fire, bomb-threat emergencies and protests or demonstrations against the Bank of Canada.

You operate state-of-the-art security equipment by conducting surveillance of vital areas of the Bank: monitoring alarms, detecting intrusion and directing response officers in an emergency. As a Security Officer, you are qualified in first aid and assist the Bank's emergency-response team during fire evacuations and emergencies.

Central Responsibilities:

• contribute to the physical security program of the Bank of Canada
• operate, monitor and use a variety of security systems
• protect personnel, physical and information assets, and property through access control
• escort visitors, tradespeople and Bank personnel carrying securities in high-security areas within the Bank to ensure the safety of personnel and property
• control access and egress of people and vehicles to and from Bank premises
• respond to emergencies (e.g., fire alarms, health and safety, intrusion alarms, access control violations) and assist colleagues as required to ensure that the security of Bank sites is maintained
• assist the public and employees at the main entry points to the building, maintaining collaborative relations with staff and visitors to support operational objectives and contribute to the Bank's good public relations when greeting members of the public
• provide on-site security for special events as required

Key Requirements:

• post-secondary certificate or diploma in security management or police foundations and two years of recent work experience


• high-school diploma and two years of recent work experience in an industrial security environment

• firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), valid for restricted firearms, non-restricted firearms and prohibited firearms
• English and French essential
• linguistic requirement: fully functional in second official language
• good oral and written communication skills
• availability to work shifts (day, evening and midnight)
• ability to commit to working a minimum of 24 hours per week
• being available for on-call and overtime, based on operational requirements
• knowledge and understanding of security concepts and the role of the Security Officer as a contributor to these concepts
• advanced working knowledge of access-control, intrusion detection, and alarm monitoring systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and other related security systems
• knowledge of and experience with automated office tools such as Microsoft Outlook and Word
• ability to operate effectively under stress during emergency situations
• excellent interpersonal skills and tact in dealing with personnel at various levels within the Bank and with the public
• demonstrated self-motivation, initiative and flexibility
• ability to work independently and in a team environment where mutual support is essential
• ability to respect confidentiality of information
• ability to exercise sound judgment, investigating beyond routine questioning and forwarding complex problems or situations to supervisor when required
• knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada (sections pertaining to the use of force and the powers of arrest)


• certification in first aid/CPR/defibrillator
• defensive tactics training
• police or military experience


• Candidates must be eligible for secret security clearance.
• The schedule is on an “as required” basis with no guarantee of a minimum number of working hours.
• Candidates must undergo a medical evaluation and obtain a Law Enforcement Interpretative Report to confirm their compatibility with the job requirements.
• Successful candidates must also successfully complete mandatory firearms training provided by the Bank upon commencement of employment.
