Job Summary

As a member of the Web Communications Team, you will assist in web development and support. In short, you will work alongside the application development lead, enhancing and testing web applications for the many sites and statistical tools that power the Bank of Canada's web presence, including bankofcanada.ca, credit.bankofcanada.ca and currencymuseum.ca.

Central Responsibilities:

• contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Bank’s web presence by offering insight into new technical opportunities to meet business objectives
• identify, recommend and implement better ways of doing things
• write and maintain custom plug-ins to support the needs of the Bank of Canada community
• create online tools and website features
• document your code
• create unit and quality-assurance tests for web applications and functions
• support the Bank’s web operations on a day-to-day basis

This position also assists in making delivery channels easier to use by improving overall information architecture, interaction design and web publishing processes. You will have contacts with Bank clients at all levels.

Key Requirements:

• a minimum of a university degree in computer studies, engineering, web design or web programming


• an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

in addition:

• a minimum of one to two years of demonstrated experience in web development and information design, preferably in organizations with a large number of employees
• English or French essential
• advanced knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and AJAX
• experience employing iterative web development and test-driven development, particularly Scrum and continuous integration
• LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) application development experience
• expertise in and knowledge of common WordPress plug-ins – their use, behaviour, benefits and risks
• expertise in PHP frameworks
• experience with project planning; ability to maintain a tight schedule and to work overtime without notice


• ability to communicate effectively in both official languages
• proven technical understanding of TCP/IP networking and firewalls
• demonstrated knowledge of unit testing (JUnit, PHPUnit) and continuous integration (Jenkins)
• knowledge of web standards
• knowledge of version control (SVN, Git, etc.)
• demonstrated experience employing iterative web development methods (e.g., Scrum)
