Salary Range

The Bank offers a competitive total compensation package with starting salaries, based on qualifications, generally ranging between $121,618 and $152,022* (job grade 20).

Department info

As part of the monetary policy function, the International Economic Analysis Department contributes to the Bank’s objectives in three main areas. First, it produces timely analysis of current and prospective external economic developments. Second, it provides analysis and policy advice on global economic issues, such as those addressed by the G-20 and the International Monetary Fund. Third, it undertakes studies on topics related to the global economy, including exchange rates and commodity prices.

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Policy Analysis of the International Economic Analysis Department, you conduct research and analysis on commodities as well as oversee and prepare forecasts and policy notes. In addition, you provide feedback on analysis and research studies on commodities prepared by others and provide guidance and training to more junior staff. You will also be called upon to represent the Bank in relevant international working groups.

As a member of the departmental management team, the Research Adviser participates in the development and implementation of the departmental work plan, supports the department’s broad management objectives, provides input to its strategic direction and contributes to “Manage the Bank” initiatives.

Central Responsibilities

• suggest, lead and conduct high-quality research/analysis on commodities
• oversee monitoring, current analysis and projections of commodity prices
• provide authoritative advice to colleagues, Bank management and external contacts in the area of commodities
• make presentations to a wide variety of internal and external audiences, and represent the Bank on matters of importance related to commodities
• build relationships with external parties, e.g., government and international agencies, other central banks, financial market participants and organizations, outside academics, for the purpose of staying abreast of current developments in commodity markets, sharing intelligence, conducting joint research, or integrating research agendas

Key Requirements

• master’s degree in economics or finance with ten years of experience in economic and policy analysis
or
• PhD in economics or finance with five years of experience in economic and policy analysis
• English and French are essential; however, qualified candidates who are not bilingual will be offered assistance to become bilingual at the functional level
• extensive knowledge of commodity markets, including physical and financial commodity markets, and the microstructure of commodity financial markets
• demonstrated ability to publish research on commodities, including in peer-reviewed academic journals
• demonstrated experience in producing high-quality and timely policy notes
• strong writing and presentation skills
• strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team, promote integration and co-operation across departments, and communicate and work effectively with Bank management
• flexibility in carrying out a number of different tasks, in some cases under tight deadlines, and ability to effectively manage own schedule and priorities to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner

Technical Abilities

• advanced knowledge of physical commodity markets and financial market instruments related to commodities
• knowledge of applied econometrics and forecasting models

Assets

• well-developed network of relevant contacts
• demonstrated experience in developing state-of-the-art models to analyze commodity market developments
• ability to communicate effectively in both official languages
