The Communications Specialist is a role on the Employee Communications team, within the Corporate Communications Department, reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications. The position works to support employee communications strategies and tactics, working with HR and other areas as required. The key responsibilities are to support the Senior Communications Specialist responsible for employee communications to provide communications planning and writing expertise across the full range of employee communications vehicles and channels, including print, online and social media channels.

This role has an internal focus requiring strong marketing, analytical, writing and interpersonal skills, professionalism and focus on providing best in class service to all OMERS stakeholders.


Communications Specialist
Develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies and programs designed to inform employees
Gather, research and prepare communications material for review by Senior Communications Specialist, HR and other internal stakeholders
Support Senior Communications Specialist with writing, editing, formatting reports, briefs, presentations, memos, website content and press releases
Manage employee communications and intranet editorial calendar; proactively work within content strategy to develop story ideas; seek out interview subjects and write intranet stories
Team with creative services to integrate internal social media tools and work on internally produced video content including script writing
Work with webmaster to track online employee communications metrics; conduct employee opinion and attitude surveys around communications to identify opportunities for improvement.
Participate in employee event planning process as required; teaming across the enterprise to develop themes and content.
Prepare and distribute informational materials to increase awareness of corporate communications and its projects
Design and deliver general information presentations to increase cross-enterprise awareness with employees of OMERS strategy and businesses.
Manage distribution lists and identify distribution process efficiencies.
Maintain both hard copy and shared electronic document libraries
Support intranet development and backup postings as required.

Project Management
Coordinates projects in partnership with the Senior Communications Specialist, Employee Communications and in collaboration with Pension Operations, to achieve operational objectives by contributing information and making recommendations to meet the changing requirements of the departmental or organizational strategies.
Teams with Creative Services to track and meet overall member communications objectives. Identifies and minimizes project risks and delays by identifying potential issues/road blocks and proactively seeking solutions.
Provides status reports defining project progress, issues and solutions to management.

Support Corporate Communications strategic objectives and participate in the development of innovative team solutions to challenging issues.
Deliver results via building strong and on-going relationships across OMERS.

Communication experience in a financial services, insurance or pension-related environment
Experience in or working with Human Resources a plus
2+ years experience in working in a corporate communications or agency environment
Writing skills, especially tailored to employee communications
Oral communications skills, decision-making skills
Experienced in planning and coordinating multi-organizational work group/team sessions
Experienced in the use of office including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and various social media tools. Additional experience in Microsoft Sharepoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and other design software also helpful.

Working Conditions:

May be required to work additional hours (evenings and weekends).
