Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of CCH operations. It is essential that all staff and physicians receive training and understand their roles and responsibilities in this field.

Summary of responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Clinical Manager, Emergency and Trauma Services will be responsible for managing the routine activities of the Emergency and Trauma Services. The incumbent will organize and direct the daily activities of the Emergency Department and is responsible for monitoring, promoting, and evaluating Trauma Services at CCH, in collaboration with the Regional Trauma Network (RTN), the Medical Director-Trauma Services, the Data Analyst, and the Director, Emergency and Trauma Services, Assault and Sexual Abuse Program. The Clinical Manager, Emergency and Trauma Services will also act as a resource to the nursing departments and other services, physicians and hospital community partners.

General Accountabilities:
• Manage day to day patient flow and operations of the departments
• Contribute to the development of and implementation of the operational plan
• Determine the staffing needs and staffing complement, expertise required based on both the number of staff but also the skill mix of staff
• Monitor patient care activities, ensuring standards of care are met.
• Respond to in-person, email, and telephone questions and concerns
• Initiate purchase request as required within the approved budget
• Ensure that all equipment and the environment in the area are within safety standards
• Manage feedback files and incidents-conduct investigations in a timely manor
• Establish learning needs of the department
• Work with material management to establish inventory and supply quota’s
• Develop in collaboration with the Director plans for pandemic and surge capacity
• Serve as a patient advocate
• Develop staff performance expectations and conveys these expectations to the staff
• Assist in managing patient flow through the department- from Triage to discharge or inpatient unit in collaboration with other patient care units, paramedics and other stakeholders
• Identify areas of process improvements that exist within the Emergency Department
• Conduct data analysis with relevant data and implements change based on Working Groups, patient and staff feedback, Best Practice Standards, Hospital policy, etc.

Requirements of the job

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Holds current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Mental Health First Aid or willing to obtain within 6 months of employment
• Training, and knowledge of Critical Care Nursing. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Emergency nursing leadership.
• Excellent people, time management, conflict management, financial management and organization skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem-solve and make recommendations for change and implement and evaluate.
• Computer literacy (Cerner, MS Office, Excel, Outlook, databases, scheduling)
• Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
• Knowledge of collective agreements and experience working in a unionized environment
• Functional proficiency in English, oral and written

Assets:
• Master’s degree in a health-related field
• Functional level in oral French
