Position Summary

A full time 14-16 week locum opportunity for a Psychiatrist in our Traumatic Stress Injury & Concurrent Program starting early June (flexible). This position is within our Guardian’s Program, delivering concurrent trauma and substance use treatment to first responders, military and veterans.

This program is delivered on-site at the Homewood Health Centre in Guelph, in a collaborative manner, with a supportive interdisciplinary team which includes psychology, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, horticulture therapy and addiction services support. In this role you will be responsible for clinical psychiatric care of patients as they develop their unique abilities to attain the highest level of functioning.

What you'll be doing

• Clinically responsible for assigned patients including admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, daily care, and discharge
• Clinical care includes diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders, concurrent substance use disorders, including medication management, withdrawal management, and psychotherapeutic interventions
• Provide ongoing supervision and management of clinical/patient care including daily rounds and sufficient individual assessments with the patient to ensure ongoing standards of patient care are met
• Collaborate with other physicians, nursing staff and allied health professionals in providing optimal patient care within an interdisciplinary team
• Complete documentation including admission history, mental status, diagnostic impression, treatment plan, weekly progress notes and finally, a comprehensive discharge summary of the highest quality to ensure the medical record is meaningful and useful and a treatment plan can be established by the team
• Utilize electronic medical platforms such as Caseworks and BDM (training provided)
• Provide clinical guidance to the program and to the admitting department for appropriate and timely referrals and admissions
• Ensure best practice standards of clinical care are implemented and maintained
• Support colleagues with patient coverage during physician absences (with NP support)
Complete and submit OHIP billings in a timely manner
• Ability to provide ECT treatment to patients at the Homewood Health Centre once per month is an asset, but not required
• Co-facilitation of CPT group therapy is possible, if interested
• Liaison with third party referrers as needed for continuity of care (VAC, WSIB, Police Associations)

What we're looking for

• A specialist certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPS) (C) or equivalent body acceptable to the RCPS (C) and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
• 3 years of clinical experience in a similar role preferred
• Experience with diagnosis and management of trauma-related disorders, mood/anxiety disorders and concurrent substance use disorders is preferred
• Interest to work with complex and comorbid disorders as well as ongoing learning and teaching to continually enhance patient care
• Adept at creating an environment that supports team spirit and collaboration across the organization
• Inspire others to be accountable through action, decisions and/or communication
• Strong ability to create exceptional relationships with clients, patients, customers
• Strong ability to negotiate and influence with proven critical thinking, analysis and complex problem solving skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly developed organizational and time-management skills
• Demonstrated commitment to infection prevention and control needs of the hospital
• Understanding of Cognitive Processing Therapy is a welcomed skill
• Experience working with first responders and/or military veterans is an asset
