The Application Architect is responsible for the overall design and development of application solutions within projects, the integrity and implementation of the enterprise-wide application and information architecture, and the continuing evolution of the software development environment (SDE).

Job Duties:

Define application solutions to achieve the client objectives, in conjunction with the Systems Analyst and Software Specialist and within the framework of the application and information architecture

Provide leadership/direction to project teams on standards, guidelines, methods, tools, and techniques in the development of the physical components of the application and information model, in the research, evaluation, selection, and purchase of packaged software/services and in the integration of packaged software/services into the WCB technical environment

Design, construct, maintain, and integrate software components

Research purchases for software/service opportunities

Customize and integrate purchased software/services

Ensure project teams produce a quality design from an operational, human factors, and development perspective through all phases of a project

Ensure project teams adhere to application and information architecture, where appropriate

Plan, perform, and verify unit, integration, system, performance, scalability, benchmark, and user acceptance testing

Maintain a working level understanding of the current WCB technical environment

Understand and contribute to WCB’s and the department’s long term strategy and plans (3 to 5 years)

Research and obtain a general understanding of new technology trends on a continuous basis

Identify/recommend standards, guidelines, methods, tools, techniques for new Software Development Environments (SDE’s) as well as opportunities for improvement.

Document and communicate the SDE.

Consult (with the assistance of the Systems Analysts) with business clients as to the applicability of technology to enable business change, resolve business problems, and achieve business opportunities

Gain a working level understanding of the client’s business: functions, organization, processes, and products

Assist the Manager of Application Development in the preparation of departmental plans and budgets

Design, develop, enhance, maintain, document, communicate, and support the application and information architecture

Maintain a general understanding of packaged software/service solutions that may be applicable to the WCB

Perform operational consulting (schedules/cycles/special runs/system upgrades/technical issues)

Application monitoring for performance, availability, reliability, security

Perform analysis, determination, and resolution of problems producing appropriate documentation

Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Two year Diploma in Computers from a CIPS accredited Community College

Minimum 7 years of experience in software development

Knowledge of formal system development life cycles

Ability to support application and information architecture, including strong data modeling skills

Ability to lead software development teams

Knowledge of software development frameworks and design patterns

Ability to set software development standards, guidelines, methods, tools, and techniques

Ability to manage a software development environment

Ability to monitor and tune application software and database management systems

Ability to define software development project plans and use estimating techniques

Ability to design and develop software in an object oriented environment, using Java, HTML, JavaScript

Ability to determine software development solutions using modern tools

Knowledge of quality assurance techniques

Ability to plan and organize workloads and meet tight deadlines

Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to communicate proficiently in both official languages (English & French) is an asset.
