As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to strengthen and promote health protection to patients, staff and members of the public attending in the hospital, prior to the first day of employment with the Hospital, all successful candidates are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination (full vaccination is required) from the Ontario Ministry of Health website or other authorized source. An individual is fully vaccinated if they have provided proof of vaccination in the form of a receipt from COVaxON (the Ministry’s provincial system for COVID-19 vaccination information) and 14 days have elapsed from the final dose. In the event that you are unable to be vaccinated as a result of a ground protected under the Human Rights Code, you may submit a written explanation of the ground and any supporting documentation to determine if you are exempt from this requirement.

Position Summary

Registered Nurse, Mental Health Emergency Services Unit
The Mental Health Emergency Services Unit (MHESU) provides medical and psychiatric assessment, consultation and intervention to individuals experiencing a mental health or substance related crisis. Patients are assessed in the Emergency Department. We do not provide counselling services over the phone.

The team in MHESU includes physicians, registered nurses as well as a variety of support personnel including Peer Support Workers who have expertise in emergency, mental health and substance related care. The team along with the patient will develop a plan that best addresses the individual’s clinical needs and may include an inpatient admission or referrals to hospital or community based services for ongoing assessment, care and stabilization.

- Crisis Intervention and stabilization

On a practical level, you will

  • Work with individuals presenting with mental health illnesses across the life span
  • Demonstrate the ability to function to the full scope of nursing practice per the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients/clients, families and other members of the health care team
  • Think critically, set priorities and organize work in response to client/patient needs
  • Be committed to ongoing learning, professional development, and continuous quality improvement
  • Have proficient skill level with computers, MS Word, Internet searches, data entry and patient information systems
  • Have clinical competence to assess and provide care to patients with a variety of mental health conditions
  • Proficiency in head-to-toe assessments and medication administration not limited to subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
  • Demonstrate your ability to perform appropriately in emergency situations
  • Qualifications

    • Diploma in Nursing, Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
    • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
    • Demonstrate the ability to function to the full scope of nursing practice per the College of Nurse of Ontario
    • Minimum one (1) year of Nursing experience in an emergency department and/or medical/surgical department, preferred
    • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (BCLS)
    • Minimal two (2) years mental health nursing experience preferred
    • Recent experience in IV/venipuncture access, preferred
    • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), preferred
    • Certification in Crisis Intervention, preferred
    • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing from a recognized community college, preferred
