As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to strengthen and promote health protection to patients, staff and members of the public attending in the hospital, prior to the first day of employment with the Hospital, all successful candidates are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination (full vaccination is required) from the Ontario Ministry of Health website or other authorized source. An individual is fully vaccinated if they have provided proof of vaccination in the form of a receipt from COVaxON (the Ministry’s provincial system for COVID-19 vaccination information) and 14 days have elapsed from the final dose. In the event that you are unable to be vaccinated as a result of a ground protected under the Human Rights Code, you may submit a written explanation of the ground and any supporting documentation to determine if you are exempt from this requirement.

Position Summary

Child & Youth Counsellor, Child Mental Health Inpatient Unit
You will provide direct care to patients and families experiencing acute psychiatric condition(s), with a focus on social skills, strengths, development and functioning in the context of the family and milieu. You will develop and implement a plan of care in collaboration with the child/family and other health care team members. You will maintain clinical competence and knowledge through continuing education and life-long learning. You have superior communication and interpersonal skills, effortlessly connecting with physicians, staff, patients, and families, and display a high degree of professionalism, with the ability to work independently, in small groups and in a team environment. You demonstrate strong problem-solving, critical thinking and decision making skills. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families

On a practical level, you will

  • Provide direct care to patients and families experiencing acute psychiatric condition(s)
  • Develop and implement a plan of care in collaboration with the child/family and other health care team members; attend meetings, maintain records
  • Act as a role model and mentors CYC colleagues and students
  • As part of the interdisciplinary team, participate in the comprehensive assessment of the adolescent with a focus on psychosocial issues, strengths, and functioning in the context of the family and milieu
  • Collaborate to develop individualized and comprehensive plan of care to achieve mutually agreed upon goals
  • Participate in quality improvement activities as required
  • Engage in evidence based practice and may initiate changes to improve the quality of CYC interventions as appropriate
  • Participate in ongoing professional development
  • Participate in unit/program/Hospital committees as required

Qualifications

  • Certified Child & Youth Counsellor Diploma from a recognized community college
  • Baccalaureate degree in related field, preferred
  • O.A.C.Y.C. membership, preferred
  • Broad experience in an acute psychiatric setting, preferred
  • Bilingualism in French/English an asset
