The Program

304-34 Vegreville Fourplex, in Vegreville, Alberta

This program is complex with high behaviours, individuals living with developmental disabilities and other mental health challenges. Experience with harm reduction, addiction and complex behaviors is an asset.

The Position

Challenging behaviours can occur on a daily basis working with persons with developmental disabilities who have significant mental health concerns, aggressive behaviours and/or trauma

As a Complex Behaviours Disability Service Worker, you will coach individuals with behavior, emotional or physical challenges, teach daily living and good citizenship skills, encourage independence, reinforce strengths that are already in place and offer support within the residence and community.

During overnight hours sleep shift staff ensure a consistent, healthy and safe environment for the person in care and are available to provide immediate support in crisis situations.

In the event of an emergent situation, sleep staff will be responsible for awake responsibilities.

*Sleep hours are paid at$16.50/sleep hr*

In Your Role You Will

The Disability Service Worker sleeps at the program and is available to assist the client during overnight hours if needed.

• 8pm - 11pm (3 awake hrs) - assist/model nightly bed-time routine (personal hygiene, brushing teeth, etc.) ensuring a consistent, healthy and safe environment for persons in care.
•11pm -7am (8 sleep hrs)- You will be provided your own space to sleep within the program (bed, couch, etc.). In the event of an emergent situation, sleep staff will be responsible for awake responsibilities to provide immediate support in crisis situations.
• 7am - 8am - support client with morning routine; day shift arrives, shift exchange

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

• Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education or equivalent
• One (1) year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities & complex needs.
• MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with clear driving abstract and reliable transportation
• A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
• Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self help, etc.

ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:
• First Aid/CPR Certification
• Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
• Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
