The National Capital Commission is a federal Crown corporation dedicated to ensuring that Canada’s Capital is a dynamic and inspiring source of pride for all Canadians, and a legacy for generations to come. The corporation is responsible for planning, as well as taking part in the development, conservation and improvement of Canada’s Capital Region. It fulfills this role through the following areas of activity: setting the long-term urban planning direction for federal lands in Canada’s Capital Region; guiding and controlling the use and development of federal lands in Canada’s Capital Region; managing, conserving and protecting the Commission’s assets (including Gatineau Park, the Greenbelt, real property, and other assets such as bridges, pathways and parkways); and maintaining heritage sites in Canada’s Capital Region, such as the official residences and commemorative sites.The main role of the Commission’s board of directors is to oversee the corporation and ensure that it meets its strategic objectives. This includes ensuring that the corporation’s resources are used effectively and efficiently; monitoring, evaluating and reporting on performance; and fostering relationships between the National Capital Commission and other levels of government and the public. The National Capital Commission is accountable to Parliament through the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada.The Chairperson is responsible for the proper conduct of the Board meetings in such a way that the Corporation carries out its mandate and objectives effectively, ensures good value for public funds, and holds management accountable for its performance. The Chairperson is also the Chairperson of the Executive Committee and an ex-officio member of the Audit Committee, the Governance Committee, the Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Land Use, and the Advisory Committee on Official Residences.Further details about the organization and its activities can be found on the National Capital Commission website.
