Job Description

The Department of Surgery at Women’s College Hospital provides a variety of services to patients with many different conditions. We focus on innovation and ambulatory surgery and are able to treat many patients on a day-surgery basis.

Summary of duties, but not limited to:
• Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to provide pre & post-operative care to ambulatory surgical patients in the Peri-anesthesia Unit
• Provide assessment and care of the patient’s pain and nausea management
• Facilitates the patient’s physical & psychological preparation for surgery & discharge
• Ensures a smooth progression of the patient through the peri-operative phase with strong assessment & critical thinking skills
• Provide extensive pre and post-operative health education, teaching and support to patients & their families, including telephone follow-up calls documented online
• Participation in education activities to advance and maintain competency in care of pre and post-operative patients
• May be required to work in other areas of the Surgical Services program

Qualifications

• Registered Practical Nurse Diploma is required
• Current Certificate of Competence (RPN) from the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Must have a minimum of 3 years current surgical experience in Surgical Day Care or other ambulatory setting
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required, current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset
• Successful completion of the Physical Assessment Course for RPN with current competency
• Successful completion of the IV Therapy/IV initiation and maintenance course for RPN with current competency
• Successful completion of Administration of Medications course and proven competence in according to the standards of practice from the College of Nurses of Ontario

• Applicant must have a solid knowledge base regarding surgical procedures including orthopedic, breast/plastic, gynecology and thyroid and general surgery, knowledge of pain procedures an asset
• Critical Care and Health Assessment and Ambulatory Surgical Nursing course preferred
• Proven competence in initiation and maintenance of intravenous therapy
• Proven ability to support comprehensive patient education throughout the perioperative continuum of care
• IM injection course is an asset
• Excellent computer skills
• Must have excellent organizational, assessment, communication and teaching skills
• Work effectively as a strong team player
• Applicant must have a solid knowledge base regarding surgical procedures including orthopedic, breast/plastic, gynecology and thyroid and general surgery; knowledge of pain procedures an asset
• Demonstrated record of good performance and acceptable attendance will be considered as part of the selection criteria.
• Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital.
• This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all.
