The Program

Associated with Spirit of Our Youth, the WJS ACE Program, is a section 23 classroom, funded by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. It provides the mechanism to support students, with a focus on aboriginal youth at the Kenora Attendance Centre in a holistic way to prepare them for a return to a regular classroom setting or alternatively a post schooling readiness to enter the community as contributing members.

In response to recommendations from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, our national social services agency has made it a strategic priority to ensure Indigenous cultural practices become a natural part of WJS Canada's organizational culture. As an organization we will strengthen programming, transform organizational relationships and most importantly, improve the experience for Indigenous individuals accessing WJS Canada programs and services we provide across Canada.

The Position

The Cultural Liaison is responsible for supporting programs with a cultural bridge to delivering Indigenous program goals and objectives as discussed and agreed together with program management teams. The cultural liaison is familiar with the region’s various First Nations practices and protocols. Provides and maintains a safe, secure and supportive environment that is culturally open to support the personal development of the youth. This position reports to the Indigenous Cultural Advisor for WJS Canada / Spirit of our Youth.

Scheduling:
• One (1) permanent, part-time position of 20 hours per week (flexible schedule, based upon the needs of the team / clients)
• Position will be a hybrid model, working from both the local WJS Canada administration office and your home-based office.

Due to the nature of the position, only self-identified Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) applicants with strong cultural ties to the community will be considered. Fluency in an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.

In Your Role You Will

Job responsibilities will include a variety of tasks that will encompass Indigenous family liaison activities, Indigenous community involvement and administrative tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to:

• Serving as Family / Cultural Liaison.
• Coordinating Indigenous/Cultural activities for staff and individuals served.
• Assisting in the development of culturally appropriate policies and procedures.
• Acting as a liaison with the Indigenous community and WJS Programs.
• Attending community workshops and/or strategic planning, connecting with community partners and dynamics of community.
• Representing the agency at community meetings.
• Generic Spiritual supports for those individuals who do not practice indigenous cultural traditions-sensitive to diverse belief systems
• Supporting individuals who wish to have experiential requests for the traditional Indigenous ceremony
• Taking individuals to any or all cultural events
• Providing one to one support i.e., doing recreational activities i.e., swimming, basketball etc.
• Providing educational component regarding the diverse populations in our communities i.e., Truth and Reconciliation process, Residential school history etc.
• Meeting with families to promote cohesive interactive relationships with individual served
• Accompanying individuals who require additional supervision in the community i.e., if an individual is on house arrest (if the individuals need to do community hours or recreation).
• Escorting to medical appointments, to counselling appointments, recreational activities, cultural events.
• Assisting on site with life skills programming, cooking, crafts, etc.
• Maintaining contact notes for all individual contact individuals, their families and care team members.
• Connecting with local organizations and First Nations for individuals who require volunteer and community hours if needed.
• Connecting with local police enforcement i.e. First Nations and municipal and provincial police and probation services as needed.
• Maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.
• Providing culturally appropriate crisis management support (as required).
• Assessing/review of all individual cultural plans.
• Providing positive role modelling.
• Providing Monthly Reports.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

• A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with individuals and families
• Knowledge of Indigenous ancestry and knowledge of the culture and tradition of the Indigenous community.
• Indigenous Awareness Teachings
• Awareness and experience with Cultural Diversity
• First Aid/CPR Level C
• Suicide Intervention
• Basic Computer skills
• Driver’s Abstract, Driver’s License (Minimum 3 years) and your own reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance

• Strong leadership skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Able to work and follow program/regional policies and procedures
• Aware of and adheres to the applicable service standards, policies and procedures of the Ministry
• Demonstrates work practices that are consistent with agency values, goals and mission statement
• Must be able to remain calm and patient in a crisis
• Build and maintain a positive working relationship with individuals and co-workers
• Demonstrates initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency
