The Program

Youth Horizons is a licensed 4-bed co-ed resource, focusing on female youth, ages 13-18, receiving services through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).

Youth Horizons provides a safe home environment in Saanich. Taking a person-centered, trauma-informed approach, staff are expected to recognize the effects of trauma and help youth cope with the effects. The goal in the provision of services is to avoid re-traumatizing and facilitate personal growth. The staff accomplish this via knowledge of the trauma-informed approach, assessment, and relationship-building, responding to disclosures, focusing on youth's strengths, and having cultural awareness.

The Position

Residence Worker (RW) with Overnight Awake Scheduling - 24 hours (Grid 10)
This position is part of a dynamic care-giver team and is responsible for assisting our person served (PS) to live successfully in a group living setting, in an accredited agency. Ensure physical, emotional, social, educational and medical needs are met. The Residence Workers assist the PS to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills. They provide behavioural support and supervision in the program and community, implement and monitor individual program plans through observation and accurate reporting, and participate in operating and maintain the program.

This Overnight Awake position attends to the health, well-being, safety and security of PS and the program site at night, and provides general, non-specific services to clients as required. Maintains a comfortable and clean living environment.

Asleep Residential Night Worker - 16 hours (Grid 5)
The asleep residential night worker (SRNW) in this accredited agency sleeps through the night, waking to attend to youth needs when necessary. Provides assistance with morning and evening routines.

This position requires union membership with BCGEU.

Scheduling
One (1) permanent full-time position of 40hours per week with a daily schedule of 2300-0700:
• 24 hours = RW with Overnight Awake Scheduling - Thursday through Saturday (Grid 5)
• 16 hours = Asleep Residential Night Worker - Sunday and Monday (Grid 10)

In Your Role You Will

• With the team, participate in assessing and planning for individuals in program; documents, implements and contributes to program evaluation.
• Provide life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance; implements personal service plans.
• Assist PS with activities of daily living such as hygiene, grooming and toileting.
• Participate in various PS-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
• Recognize, analyze, and deal with potential emergency situations such as PS aggressive behaviour according to PS Behaviour Safety Plan to ensure no harm comes to the PS and/or the public.
• Administer medication to PS in accordance with established policy, protocols, and procedures.
• Assist with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties.
• Provide emotional support and feedback to PS and their families.
• Transport and assist PS to attend appointments, shopping or leisure activities; operates motor vehicles safely and legally while transporting PS or on WJS business.
• Perform residential maintenance and housekeeping duties such as laundry, sweeping, mopping floors, mowing lawns, inventory, shopping, cleaning equipment and food services.
• Maintain reports such as statistics, logs and daily activities relating to PS.
• Utilize practices that promote health, welfare, safety and security of persons served.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required.

WJS adheres to provincial/legislated communicable disease prevention protocols. Some of our community health care providers/stakeholders may require WJS employees to be vaccinated in order to be able to enter establishments while supporting WJS individuals/clients in service.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

• A diploma or degree in one of the humanities, social work or related field. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Minimum of two years recent related experience in child and youth care, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
• Previous experience with operating a licensed home and trauma informed practice
• Valid BC Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract with a reliable, safe vehicle that has appropriate insurance

Other requirements:
• Valid CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Hygiene and Sanitation certificates (or ability to obtain within probation period)
• Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate and/or MANDT and Conflict Resolution Certificate (or ability to obtain within probation period)
• Physician’s note confirming suitability, including immunization records and a negative tuberculosis screening test
• Positive behavior supports experience
